Satellites
- At any given time, 3-5 satellites are gathering data, triangulating location and transmitting that information to the AVL system.
- Satellites can pinpoint vehicle locations to within 3-15 feet.
Vehicles
- Each vehicles is equipped with a GPS receiver that sends data through a modem to a radio located on the vehicle.
- The data is then transmitted to the tower site.
Tower
- The tower site gives greater distances to track vehicles.
- From the tower, information is sent to the base station.
Base Station
- The base station receives the data and transmits it to the computer to show vehicle location.
